The number in that error message is the only number that matters, which is why this tool takes megabytes rather than a quality slider — a percentage tells you about our internals, not about your problem.
What actually makes a PDF large is almost always photographs. A scanned page, a product shot, a site survey with twelve images across eight pages: those are the megabytes. The words themselves are described as instructions rather than pixels, so they cost almost nothing and lose nothing when the file shrinks. That is why a compressed document here stays selectable, searchable, and correct — the text was never the thing being compressed.
Three named outcomes cover almost every case. As small as it goes is right for something that will only ever be read on a screen. Smaller, still sharp is the one almost everyone wants. Barely smaller exists for documents going to a printer, where softening a photograph is not acceptable. Each shows the real predicted size of your own file, computed before you commit to anything.
Sometimes the honest answer is that there is nothing to do. A contract, a letter, a set of terms — text all the way through — is already close to as small as a PDF gets. Other tools will hand you back a file 2% lighter and call it a success. We would rather tell you the truth and leave your document alone, then point you at what might actually help: splitting it, or converting the pages you do not need to keep as text.
